1. Measure all animals standing!
2. For a thoracic, abdominal or thoraco-Iumbar spine exam, all measurements are taken at the same place on the animal.
- Observe the back of a canine from above. Look for the widest point across the ribs and
take a lateral measurement. A dorso-ventral or ventral-dorsal measurement is made at
that same point.
- This widest point will be the hardest area to penetrate in the thorax. This is the area
where the lung field extends over the liver.
- The widest point will be the hardest area to penetrate in the abdomen. The liver is the
most dense organ in the abdomen.
- The widest point will usually be right over the thoraco-lmnbar spine.
3. For a pelvis measure across the wings of the ilium.
- This is a very accessible area to measure with highly repeatable results compared to
where most people measure for a pelvis.
- When taking a ventral-dorsal pelvis, always take into account the position of the stifles
in relation to the table surface. If the stifles are not down on the table, increase your
technique slightly.
4. For all extremity exams, measure at the widest point and set technique accordingly.
5. Make sure all personnel measure all areas at the same point or technique, and therefore film quality, will vary greatly from one study to the next
